The beautiful island also hides a side full of mystery and “thrilling” charm.
Sardinia never ceases to surprise: dream beaches, crystal clear sea, coastal towers, precious testimonies of the Nuragic age, natural parks, spiritual paths, strong traditions that are still alive and a history full of mystery and legend.
The magnificent island is the guardian of castles, manors and ancient villas where sinister ghost stories populate the folklore and originate from real events mixed with ancient legends.
Visiting these places, in addition to causing a “shiver down the spine”, allows you to get to know Sardinia from another side and realise how much still there is to be discovered in this land.
5 thrilling places you can’t miss
It may seem extravagant that this island of beaches of white fine sand caressed by crystalline waves, kissed by the sun and immersed in the scents of the Mediterranean, boasts a “dark”, mysterious aspect, full of ghost stories and “haunted” places.
This is the case and below we discover 5 unmissable locations.
The Castle of Medusa
The Castle of Medusa, now in ruins and with a rather disturbing profile, stands out between Asumi and Samugheo, in the territory of Oristano, and has always been the protagonist of stories that consider it inhabited by evil spirits.
Legend has it that when Medusa ascended the throne of Sardinia, she was defeated by Perseus who beheads her and leaves for Greece with her head.
This is a story that can overlap with the famous legend of the Gorgon told in Greek mythology. The spirit of Medusa still dwells in the castle, protecting the queen’s treasure.
The Malaspina Castle
In the charming village of Bosa, in the province of Oristano, stands the Malaspina Castle, a remarkable example of military and civil architecture, built in 1112.
Known to be inhabited by ghosts, it is linked to the legend of the Marquis Malaspina who, convinced that he had been betrayed and blinded by jealousy, cut off his wife’s fingers and left leaving her to bleed on the floor.
He was then arrested for the crazy deed. It is said that the spirit of the woman still wanders within the walls of the manor, unable to give herself peace.
The Castle of Casteldoria
In the province of Sassari, not far from Santa Maria Coghinas, the Castle of Casteldoria, of which today remains only a majestic tower that would guard the treasure of the Doria family, stood on the plain of Coghinas.
According to legend, a witch fell in love with Admiral Andrea Doria, lord of the castle.
However, unable to conquer him even with the most powerful potions, she told him that he would die when a green army besieged the castle.
When spring came, the witch turned the grass of the valley into knights and the Admiral, remembering the prophecy, threw himself from the walls of the manor.
That ghost army would still guard the rich treasure of the castle.
The Castle of Quirra
Among the many legends about the Castle of Quirra, near Villaputzu, the most mysterious concerns Donna Violante Carroz, Countess of the manor.
She lived between 1450 and 1500 and earned the nickname “bloody” and was described as a greedy murderer. The legend recounts how hanged the parish priest of Quirra as he was against her clandestine love affair.
According to the legend, he died by jumping into the void from the highest point of the castle.
It is said that the spirit of the woman still wanders, complaining, among the ruins of the castle, reachable by a steep climb.
The ex-Lazzaretto of Cagliari
Built in the seventeenth century to house plague patients, in 1720 it became a hospital and, today is home to cultural events.
It hides, however, a disturbing secret: it is the home of a wandering soul.
Some people testify to having seen the spirit of a child playing football with a skull, turning lights on and off, and playing musical instruments from the exhibition.
The “thrill” at the theatre: in Cagliari, the Addams Family play is staged
Speaking of “thrill and mystery”, the most original, macabre and funny family in America, the Addams Family, makes its appearance on the stage of Teatro Doglio on Sunday 19th February, at 11 am and 4 pm, for the only date in Sardinia.
The mastery of the Compagnia della Corona brings, in fact, into the heart of Cagliari, a grown-up Wednesday in love with Lucas, a boy from an ordinary, typical and “normal” American family.
The idea of getting married worries her a lot: what reaction will her mother have to the news? Better to confide everything to his father making sure he keeps the secret.
An invitation to dinner at the Addams’s house and the traditional “Game” will bring the two families to get to know each other better, finding themselves confessing unspeakable secrets in a convulsive evening full of misunderstandings and uncomfortable truths that will change everyone’s lives.
Tickets for the two shows at the Teatro Doglio are on sale in the channels of Box Office Sardegna and the store of Viale Regina Margherita, 43, in Cagliari.
