Mum’s Day Weekend: together for cancer prevention
On the occasion of Mother’s Day, a very special event at Palazzo Doglio.
This year Mother’s Day is celebrated on May 14th. Unlike Father’s Day, which always falls on March 19th, the day dedicated to celebrating the maternal figure is a moving holiday that does not have a fixed day but is always celebrated on the second Sunday of May.
From the fifties until the year 2000 Mother’s Day has always been May 8th but then, to align with the American calendar, it was changed.
However, it is not a fixed rule at the international level: Belgium has chosen to celebrate on the last Sunday in May, England, Scotland and Wales on the fourth Sunday of Lent and in Bulgaria, Albania, Russia, Moldova, Romania and Macedonia the date coincides with Women’s Day on the 8th March. In Spain, Portugal and San Marino the day is March 15th while in Argentina is in October.
Over time, there have been many initiatives aimed at celebrating mothers, such as the National Day of the Mother and the Child, in 1933, up to the mid-fifties as we know it today.
In particular, in 1956 an initiative was held in Liguria, in Bordighera, with a promotional and commercial purpose born from the idea of Giacomo Pallanca, president of the Ente Fiera del Fiore e Pianta Ornamentale of Bordighera-Vallecrosia, and of the then mayor and senator Raoul Zaccari.
In 1957, however, Don Otello Migliosi, parish priest of Tordibetto di Assisi, decided to pay homage to the figure of the woman and the mother and, at the same time, promote dialogue between cultures thanks to a day of comparison and dialogue.
In 1958 Mother’s Day was finally established by law (of which Zaccari was the promoter) even if it was not so simple: some senators opposed it because they believed that feelings and family should remain outside the legislature.
The meaning of love and care on Mother’s Day
Even in ancient times festivals and rituals linked to the figure of Mother Earth and those deities that represented the rebirth of nature were celebrated during the spring. The Greeks celebrated the mother of all gods, Rhea, while the Romans celebrated Cybele, the goddes of mothers and nature.
Mothers are the origin of life, of the family, and symbolise unconditional love and affection, the ability to take care of and dedicate oneself to the well-being of others.
