Hydromassage: what is it and why it is so good for the body
The many benefits of water massage, a real panacea for the body and mind.
Ideal for relaxing after an intense period of stress and to improve the appearance of the skin, hydromassage is that particular type of massage that utilises pressurised water: you immerse yourself in a tub or a pool whose jets of water give an energising and relaxing effect on the skin making it smooth.
Hydromassage is very useful to give a feeling of general wellbeing and to relieve muscle pain.
How does that work? The continuous circulation of water is at its base: the invigorating and stimulating massage is created by the recirculation of water.
The hot tub uses fillers with valves that connect the surface with the water pipes: an electric pump ensures that the water contained in the tank is sucked from the fillers and released immediately after, giving life to the unmistakable “bubble effect”.
The circular motion that is created allows the water jets to generate an authentic massage.
In practice, you sit in a tub or pool and approach the desired part of the body to a jet of water and air that creates a series of small bubbles that massage the skin and make the water vibrate.
There are two types of hydromassage: traditional hydromassage with fresh water and thalassotherapy with salt water. The latter, since salt water is heavier than freshwater, is the ideal one for energising muscles and motor rehabilitation. In addition, it proves effective to stimulate the immune system and to keep the metabolism active thanks to the presence of iodine.
All the benefits of hydromassage
What are the benefits of hydromassage? It is the optimal remedy to reduce states of anxiety and irritability, stress, promote sleep and stimulate the production of endorphins.
When it comes to the body’s well-being, the hot tub is a perfect ally for those suffering from cellulite or weight problems: it acts against water retention and its toning massage allows you to firm arms, belly, legs and buttocks with a considerable benefit also for the skin that, even after only 30 minutes, will appear smoother.
But that’s not all: hydromassage is also essential for health issues as it can prevent arthritis, gout, rheumatism, back pain, and revitalises cells by allowing more oxygen to circulate.
If practised with hot water, it performs a vasodilating function allowing the blood to easily transport oxygen, vitamins, and mineral salts throughout the body, thus improving tissue oxygenation.
To enhance the effect of the hydromassage it is important, before entering the water, to have a scrub in order to exfoliate the skin and prepare it for the water massage. At the end of the treatment, you can pass a jet of cold water on the skin to tone it further and then moisturize it with a firming and nourishing cream.
There are no particular contraindications for hydromassage but it is not recommended for heart patients, pregnant women, children, elderly people due to increased blood pressure and those suffering from low blood pressure as the water temperature is usually around 37-38 degrees.
The suggestion generally is to never exceed 30 minutes twice a week.
