Halloween at Corte Doglio: an evening of adventures for the most thrilling party of the year
“Children’s Halloween”, a great entertainment party for the little ones at Corte Doglio, to experience a magical day in an exclusive location.
Palazzo Doglio, an elegant five-star hotel a few steps from the sparkling centre of Cagliari, will host a great Halloween party for children of all ages in its scenic courtyard.
Halloween, the scariest holiday of the year, falls on October 31st. It originates from the ancient Celtic-pagan festival Samhain, the Celtic New Year as their year did not begin on the first of January but on the first of November. This was the watershed between the summer and winter periods, the hardest season for the Celts.
It was a time of cold and darkness, with long months spent indoors. Samhain’s function was to exorcise the arrival of winter and its uncertainties, a celebration that combined the fear of spirits returning to Earth with the joy of celebrating the beginning of a new year.
During the night of October 31st, the Celts gathered in the woods for the lighting of the Sacred Fire. On their return to the village, they wore grotesque masks and illuminated the path with lanterns made from onions which contained the embers of the Sacred Fire.
From Ireland, the holiday travelled to the United States, where Halloween has almost become a national holiday. During the nineteenth century, the Emerald Isle was hit by terrible famines and many Irish went to seek their fortune in the USA bringing with them many of their traditions including the Celtic New Year.
Overseas, Halloween (All Hallow’s Eve, All Saints’ Eve) lost the religious and ritual meaning over time to turn into a cheerful and picturesque opportunity to have fun and dress up in costumes, a sort of “Autumn Carnival”.
The hallmarks of the “scariest” festival of the year are the carved pumpkins and the tradition of “trick or treat”, both of Irish origin. The pumpkins, also called Jack-o’-Lantern, Jack’s lanterns, come from the legend of the Irish blacksmith, Jack. A heavy drinker, Jack sold his soul to the devil to repay his debts but managed to deceive him several times.
Because of his many sins, after his death on Halloween night, Jack was refused entry into Heaven. At the same time the devil, who felt wronged by the blacksmith’s tricks, prevented him from entering hell and threw a burning ember at him. According to the legend, Jack picked up the ember and inserted it into a turnip, as if it were a lantern, to light his way during his incessant wandering between the world of the living and that of the dead.
The tradition of trick-or-treat derives instead from the Celts’ custom to leave food on the table for the dead, fairies and elves during the night of Samhain so that they would not play tricks on the living.
Today, the day of October 31st is also celebrated in Italy with costumes, sweets and various traditions.
In Sardinia, in the specific, the tradition of the Concas and sos mortos are observed with pumpkins carved in the shape of a skull, and of the Nimeddas, The sweetbreads, during which children go from house to house in search of gifts and sweets.
