The word Christmas comes from the Latin term Natāle for ellipses of Diem natālem Christi (day of birth of Christ) which in turn originates from natālis, derived from nātus, perfect participle of the verb nāsci (born). In Christian tradition, Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus told through the Gospels according to Luke and Matthew that narrate the announcement of the angel Gabriel, the deposition of the child in the manger, the adoration of the shepherds and the visit of the Magi, or the Epiphany.
The first mention of the Nativity of Christ, on December 25th, dates back to 336 and is mentioned in the illustrated calendar Chronographus, drawn up around the middle of the fourth century by the Roman scholar Furio Dionisio Filocalo, however, the first traces of Christmas are already found in the Commentary on Daniel by Saint Hippolytus of Rome, dated 203-204.
Several hypotheses try to explain the historical origins of a holiday characterized by social and religious traditions that change from country to country: for example, according to some historians, the date December 25 was chosen to coincide the feast of Natalis Solis Invictus with the celebration of the birth of Christ which in the Book of Malachi, a text in the Hebrew and Christian Bible, is described as the new “sun of Justice“.
Other scholars, however, support the idea that there is a relationship between Christmas and the Saturnalia, a cycle of festivities celebrated in ancient Rome between the 17th and 23rd of December. These particular anniversaries were linked to the cult of Saturn, god of regeneration and agriculture, and provided sumptuous banquets during which the exchange of small gifts, called strenne (from the Latin strēna, or “gift of good luck”), among the participants who used to exchange the wish I Saturnalia abbreviation of Ego Tibi optimis Saturnalia auspico (“I wish you to spend happy Saturnalia”).
Today, the exchange of gifts (or Christmas strenne) is one of the traditions that characterize Christmas, together with the preparation of the nativity scene and the Christmas tree decorated with balls of every size and colour, festoons and classic light chains or LED light bulbs.
