New Year’s Eve in Cagliari: the origin of the party that celebrates the new year
New Year’s Eve in Cagliari is the package of Palazzo Doglio dedicated to all those who want to spend the magical night of the last day of the year in an exclusive location.
Palazzo Doglio, a five-star hotel in the centre of Castello, one of the historic districts of Cagliari, has thought of a special New Year’s Eve package to celebrate the magical night of New Year’s Eve and the first day of the year.
The night of New Year’s Eve corresponds to the night between December 31st and January 1st. The recurrence that marks the birth of a new year in all the countries that follow the Gregorian calendar, is often erroneously called New Year (from the beginning of the year).
December 31st is the day dedicated to the saint protagonist of numerous legends, venerated by both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, but the New Year’s Day originates from the celebrations in honour of the Roman god Janus that in the Roman religion, Latin and Italic was depicted with two faces because he is a deity able to look at the past and the future at the same time.
The choice of considering January 1st as the first day of the year is linked to the introduction of the Julian calendar promulgated by Julius Caesar in the year 46 B.C. and remained in force until the sixteenth century when it was replaced, through the bolla Inter gravissimas of Pope Gregory XIII, from the Gregorian calendar.
However, it should be remembered that in the Middle Ages, although the calendar based on the cycle of seasons was used in many European countries, numerous dates were indicating the beginning of the year. For example, in England and Ireland, from the 12th century until 1752, the New Year was celebrated on the 25th of March, while in Spain it was celebrated on the 25th of December until the beginning of the 17th century. In France, however, the New Year’s Eve coincided with the Resurrection Sunday until 1564, but with the Edict of Roussillon of the 9th of August 1564, it was established that it was to be considered as the first day of the year on the 1st of January 1564 (the reform, however, came into force only three years later).
Also in Venice, the New Year’s Eve fell on the 1st of March until 1797, in Puglia, Calabria and Sardinia it was celebrated on the 1st of September, following the Byzantine style, while in the Holy Roman Empire the dates varied from city to city.
The New Year continued to be celebrated on different dates even after the adoption of the Gregorian calendar until 1691 when Pope Innocent XII established that the year should begin on January 1st, the day of Jesus’ circumcision.
