“The Gruffalo” at Teatro Doglio: all the info you need
The most anticipated children’s show of the year lands on the stage of Teatro Doglio
The Gruffalo, the most anticipated children’s show of the year, will be performed on the stage of Teatro Doglio in Cagliari Saturday, 5th November at 4 pm and 6 pm. This will be the only date of the tour in Sardinia.
The musical comedy, an ageless fairy tale for the young and the old, is based on the story written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, a true classic of children’s literature.
The author is considered an absolute icon in the UK, counted by the Guardian among the “Top Sellers” of the English market along with Dan Brown and JK Rowling. Julia Donaldson is the author of a vast number of children’s stories that have immediately become modern classics and “The Gruffalo” is one of her best known.
The books will all be available to browse and explore at Teatro Doglio thanks to the fruitful collaboration with the bookstore “Libreria Favolare”.
The first adventure of the Gruffalo came out in bookstores on the 23rd of March 1999, published by MacMillan Children’s Books. In a short time, it conquered the reader’s hearts becoming a publishing success and exceeding, to date, 48 million copies sold worldwide.
But what is the fairy tale “The Gruffalo” about? It is the story of a cunning and hungry mouse who tells the legend of a strange animal, a curious cross between a buffalo and a bear “His eyes are orange, his tongue is black, He has purple prickles all over his back”, to protect himself from the many pitfalls of the forest. Surprisingly, he later discovers that the scary creature he invented actually exists! However, he should not be afraid as the Gruffalo will become the best ally for his security.
One of the central messages of the story is precisely that it is not necessary to be “big and scary” to survive in a dense leafy forest: even a small mouse can do it by relying on inventiveness, wit and imagination.
Over the years, “The Gruffalo” has been adapted for TV and cinema, all the way to the great success of the theatrical show, confirming itself as a cult for children. This fairy tale lends itself very well to be represented on stage as it is full of animals with human qualities and virtues such as kindness, curiosity and foresight.
With cheerful and engaging tones, it helps to develop empathy, to believe in oneself, to open up to diversity and stimulates the imagination.
In Italy, the show is staged in a completely original version and for the second time, as proof of the appreciation of the public, by the Aida Foundation with the il Centro Servizi Culturali Santa Chiara and the Teatro Stabile del Veneto, in collaboration with the BSMT (Bernstein School of Musical of Bologna).
