The Addams Family: all the information about the Teatro Doglio Show
The most original family of all time lands on Teatro Doglio’s stage.
The most original, macabre and funny family in America, the Addams Family, has returned to the limelight conquering today’s children, after becoming a cult for their grandparents and parents before them.
The new series Wednesday, directed by Tim Burton and broadcasted on Netflix, has achieved great success. So much so that the second season has already been confirmed.
Since its debut on the well-known streaming platform, Wednesday has surpassed Stranger Things in the ranking of the most viewed series of all time obtaining, in the first 28 days, 1.237 billion hours viewed!
A record for the new and revisited TV series featuring, perhaps, the most interesting character of the Addams Family, Wednesday. In her teenage years, she tries to master her nascent psychic abilities, investigates a series of murders, meets new friends and rivals at Nevermore Academy and tries to solve the mystery that involved his parents 25 years earlier.
From today’s success to the glories of the past: a face to face with a myth
The Netflix series directed by Tim Burton has brought back what was already a real myth in the past, born in the late thirties from the imagination and pen of Charles Addams and published on the pages of the weekly “The New Yorker”.
It all originates in a cartoon of December 6, 1938: a door-to-door salesman tries to sell a vacuum cleaner to the beautiful but gloomy woman who welcomes him into a rather dilapidated house.
Here is the first appearance of the future Morticia Addams with the author’s distinctive satirical key: ridiculing the stereotype of the “perfect American family” by wisely dosing black humour and macabre tones.
In the following cartoons, the mysterious lady was gradually joined by six other recurring characters: the husband, the two children, the grandmother, the uncle and the butler.
A myth was born destined to achieve even more success when David Levy, a television producer, noticed in the window of a New York bookstore “Homebodies”, the fourth anthology of cartoons, and thought that the characters portrayed could become the protagonists of a cult series.
The series, made by ABC, aired in black and white for two seasons, in 1964 and 1966.
Charles Addams, who had already given his surname to the family, chose their names and defined their personality and role for the series. This is how the public met the spouses Morticia Frump and Gomez Addams, the children Wednesday and Pugsley, grandmother Addams, the bald uncle Fester, the butler Lurch and the mascot of the house Hand.
The Addams family was quickly made iconic by the series and, from that moment on, the characters inspired the creation of works in several other media such as cartoons, feature films, video games (including arcade games, the best-selling pinball machine in history), board games, action figures, up to the theatre and streaming on Netflix.
The adaptation for the theatre comes from the inspiration of Andrew Lippa, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, who sign a hilarious musical comedy that debuted in 2010 on Broadway with Bebe Neuwirth and Nathan Lane in the role of the bizarre spouses Morticia and Gomez Addams.
The Addams Family lands on the stage of Teatro Doglio
The Addams Family is still relevant today, keeping up with the times ninety years after its first appearance, thanks to the genius of Tim Burton with the series “Wednesday”, which sees Catherine Zeta Jones in the role of Morticia. The Crown Company reinterprets the story for Teatro Doglio, in the heart of Cagliari. In their version, a grown-up Wednesday falls in love with Lucas, a boy from an ordinary, typical, “normal” American family.
Teatro Doglio is an authentic architectural jewel of the Sixties, discovered by chance during the first renovations of the nearby Palazzo Doglio and returned to its citizens after forty years of closure. Here cultural events of absolute quality are held and on Sunday 19th of February Teatro Doglio will become home to the bizarre family with two showings, 11 am and 4 pm, for the only date in Sardinia.
In the plot, a grown-up Wednesday is worried about the idea of getting married. What reaction will her mother have to the news? Idea! Better to confide everything to his father making sure he keeps the secret.
An invitation to dinner at the Addams’s house and the traditional “Game” will bring the two families to know each other better, finding themselves confessing unspeakable secrets in a convulsive evening full of misunderstandings and uncomfortable truths that will change everyone’s lives.
Being Carnival Sunday, Teatro Doglio will welcome its guests dressed in an Addams Family themed costume: the most beautiful mask will win a prize!
Tickets for the two shows at Teatro Doglio are on sale in the Box Office Sardegna channels and their store in Viale Regina Margherita, 43, in Cagliari.
