World Padel Tour Open 2021: the international stars of padel compete in Cagliari
The international padel stars will meet in Sardinia for the World Padel Tour Open 2021 scheduled in Cagliari from the 5th to the 12th of September.
Cagliari, the Sardinian capital that anthropologist Francesco Alziator calls the “City of the Sun”, will once again be the hosting city of a unique sporting event: The World Padel Tour – Sardegna Open 2021 presented by Enel, which every year brings the top competitors to climb the world rankings.
The World Padel Tour, considered the highest expression of international Padel, is a long journey through the continents that every year attracts thousands of fans with events taking place in Spain, Argentina, Mexico, England, Brazil, France, Belgium and Sweden.
Organized by NSA Group, with the patronage of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the City of Cagliari, the World Padel Tour – Sardegna Open 2021, the only Italian stage of the circuit, will be hosted on the courts of the Tennis Club Cagliari located in a natural environment of great value.
The sports facilities and recreational facilities of the Cagliari Tennis Club are immersed in the beautiful green oasis of Monte Urpinu and currently represent one of the most important landmarks of Padel in Italy in terms of experience, quality of the fields and partnerships.
A bit of tennis, a little squash and something of racquetball, Paddle is a sport with uncertain origins, probably yielded in the late nineteenth century thanks to a crew of the English navy. According to this first hypothesis, it was the sailors of Queen Victoria who invented the game of padel to cheat the time spent onboard ships: the men of the crew, using the walls of the holds as banks, threw a ball that was rejected with the help of a paddle.
Another story dating back to the late nineteenth century, states that Padel was conceived by American Reverend Frank Beal, and the name comes from the solid plate racket used on the field called paddle racquet. A third hypothesis links the origins of Padel to Platform Tennis, a game developed in New York in the early 1920s by Fessenden Blanch and James Cogswell: to be able to play tennis during the winter, the two installed a small tennis court in their home garden with a fence at its edge and the floor raised from the ground, equipped with a heating system to prevent the accumulation of snow, also preventing the ball from leaving the field.
There is also a fourth version that tries to explain the creation of this sport so similar to tennis: in 1969 the Mexican Enrique Corcuera decided to build a tennis court in his home in Acapulco, but the lack of space forced him to consider the walls of his home as an integral part of the playing field. Inspired by the rules of tennis, Corcuera defined those of the game he would baptize as Padel.
Later on, when the Spanish entrepreneur Alfonso Hohenlohe, guest of Corcuera, discovered Padel decided to build a field in his sports club in Marbella in Andalusia, and a few years the sport spread throughout the world, especially in Argentina, wherein 1993 there were already 35,000 courts on which 4,500,000 players played.
