The musical background of August in Sardegna in jazz, and from north to south many events will enliven the island. Indeed, Sardinia is one of the lands that show the most interest in a musical genre that is still popular today. So let’s find out what are the unmissable events of Sardegna in Jazz.
Time in Jazz
Now in its 35th edition, Time in Jazz is one of the most interesting regional and national jazz events. The festival, conceived and directed by Paolo Fresu, is held Aug. 7-16 in Berchidda (Ss) and other locations in northern Sardinia: Arzachena, Banari, Bortigiadas, Buddusò, Budoni, Cheremule, Consorzio Puntaldia, Loiri Porto San Paolo, Luogosanto, Mores, Oschiri, Porto Rotondo, San Teodoro, Tempio Pausania and Tula.
Time in Jazz events are free, except for the evening concerts in Piazza del Popolo in Berchidda (starting time at 9:30 p.m.). Prominent figures who will attend the festival include Israeli trumpeter Avishai Cohen, Stefano Di Battista with his tribute to Ennio Morricone, renowned saxophonist Archie Shepp, trumpeter Mathias Eick and Malian singer Oumou Sangarè.

Sulky Jazz Festival
In Sant’Antioco, from 1 July to 26 August, is the Sulky Jazz Festival. Now in its 4th edition, the festival is held in truly exceptional locations, such as the beaches of Cala Sapone, Cala Lunga, Maladroxia and the historic center of Sant’Antioco. The festival is opened by Kinga Glyk, Polish bassist and enfant prodige of European jazz blues.
Matteo Leone, winner of the Parodi 2021 Award, is another guest, together with Sylvia Pagni, Carmen Souza & Theo Pas’cal, Harcsa Veronika Quartet, Petra Mangoni & Andrea Dindo.

Musica sulle Bocche International Jazz Festival
The 35 concerts of the international jazz festival “Musica sulle Bocche” are held in some of the most beautiful backgrounds of northern Sardinia. The festival starts in La Maddalena and ends in Castelsardo, with intermediate stops in other towns. Some of the concerts will take place in stunning Romanesque churches, while one of them will be on the Asinara Island.
The concerts start with The Maverick Orchestra, directed by Enzo Favata, creator of the Festival. In the following days it will be the turn of other important artists, such as Irene Grandi, Germano Lanzoni, Mario Tozzi, Matteo Mancuso, Nils Petter Molvær etc. All information about the Festival is on the official website.
Nuoro Jazz 2022
Nuoro Jazz is another unmissable event for all jazz lovers. From 22 to 31 August, the Nuoro Music Institute organizes a series of concerts. The festival begins with the concert “Our favorite Ellington” by the trio Angelo Lazzeri, Guido Zorn and Alessandro Fabbri, at the Garden of the Satta Library in Piazza Asproni.

Nora Jazz Festival
Also noteworthy is the 13th edition of the Nora Jazz Festival, from 30 July to 11 August at the Roman Theater of Nora (Pula, South Sardinia). Sona Jobarteh, with her mix of blues and afropop, opens the festival. She is one of the most original African musicians of today and a major player of the kora, the twenty-one-stringed African harp.
The festival hosts three other extraordinary female voices: Simona Molinari on Thursday 4 August, China Moses on Saturday 6 August and Cristina Branco on Thursday 11 August. These are four unmissable events, which highlight the talent of world-class artists.
