Paolo Fresu at the Teatro Doglio: all the infos
Paolo Fresu, one of the most important trumpet players of the contemporary jazz scene, is going to play at the Teatro Doglio with his trio.
A true Sardinian, Paolo Fresu returns now to his homeland. And is going to perform for the first time at the Teatro Doglio. Indeed, the trumpet player is taking the stage with his new trio on Saturday February 19th, at 9 pm, for an unmissable jazz evening.
Fresu strongly wanted the trio, which includes Dino Rubino on the piano and Marco Bardoscia on the double bass. This union started from the theatrical project “Tempo di Chet – The version of Chet Baker” produced by the Teatro Stabile in Bolzano under the direction of Leo Muscato. And the show is still on! This is due to the great empathy of the three musicians, who are artists and communicators at the same time.

Who is Paolo Fresu
Paolo Fresu was born in Berchidda, Sardinia, on February 10th, 1961. He was very young, 11 years old, when he started studying music by joining the Bernardo De Muro Band in his hometown. Here he learnt the first theoretical and technical concepts, preparatory to the conservatory. But it was when he moved to Sassari that Fresu discovered what would become his true passion, that is jazz.
In Sassari he attended the Luigi Canepa conservatory. Here he began to discover the sounds that will characterize him in the following years. Finally, his career officially began in 1982 when, in his early twenties, he recorded some tracks for the Italian TV RAI, under the guidance of Bruno Tommaso. In the meantime, he participated in the seminars of “Siena Jazz”, where he further refined his technique.
He completed his studies at the Giovanni da Palestrina conservatory in Cagliari, graduating in trumpet in 1984 under the master Enzo Morandini. In those years he also participated in projects that mixed jazz and ethnic music, world music, contemporary music, pop music and ancient music. Thus, he started some collaborations with nationally and internationally renowned artists, such as Alice, Farafina, Trilok Gurtu, Michael Nyman, Negramaro, Evan Parker, Gunther Schuller, Stadio and Ornella Vanoni.
However, Paolo Fresu has done a lot also for his homeland. Since 1988 he has been proposing and presiding over the Time in Jazz in Barchidda. This is an annual jazz music festival that has acquired an international relevance over the years. Furthermore, he had been the artistic director of the Nuoro jazz seminars from 1989 to 2103.
The location of Teatro Doglio
Discovered by chance during the renovation of the nearby Palazzo Doglio, Teatro Doglio is an authentic 1960s architectural jewel. After a long closure it is now open, giving Cagliari a place for high quality cultural events.
The theater is part of the Palazzo Doglio redevelopment project. Its reopening after 40 years revives one of the historic districts of the city.
Indeed, Teatro Doglio is a contemporary space and a multifunctional structure, with a capacity of 100 to 1000 people. It is also a congress center, with a splendid winter garden, 3 meeting rooms, internal and external foyer and state-of-the-art equipment.
Today, Teatro Doglio is the second largest theater in the city and a reference point for the cultural agenda. Thanks to wide-ranging projects, it is comparable to the Teatro Lirico of Cagliari, another important symbol of the cultural, historical and artistic heritage of the Sardinian capital.
