Nora Jazz Festival: one of the most anticipated events of the Sardinian summer
It will be an all-female edition of the Nora Jazz Festival 2021, one of the most important national and international music festivals held at the beautiful Roman Theatre of Nora.
The International Nora Jazz Festival, from Saturday 31st of July to Thursday 12th of August, is staged in the enchanting and mysterious archaeological site – the Roman Theatre of Nora, immersed in the scent of one of the most beautiful seas in the world, and live music of four extraordinary female voices.
After the long silence of theatres and stages caused by the restrictive measures imposed to contain the health emergency by Coronavirus, the Nora Jazz Festival aims to give authentic emotions to regain new energy and momentum through the voices of four incredible artists.
Each edition of the festival, initiated by Angelo Tolu in 2009, attracts an increasingly prepared and curious audience and has become the symbol of summer in Sardinia. Over the years, there have been many artists who have been on the stage of the ancient Roman Theatre of Nora, the only known Roman theatre in Sardinia, with a capacity of around 1100-1200 seats.
The building, dated 40 after Christ, is in the monumental centre of the town, not far from the forum and the Roman temple, on the southern slopes of the hill of Tanit. At present, important parts of the theatre are preserved including the cavea, consisting of eleven steps in purple andesite in which there is room for spectators, the two side entrances, the space dedicated to the orchestra paved in marble slabs with an external border in mosaic, the central structures of the scene with the recesses for the wooden beams on which the stage rested and the stairs to reach the terraces above the entrances (tribunalia).
Nora, which is a few dozen kilometres from Cagliari, was the first Phoenician city of the island, one of the most important ports of Sardinia and the centre of the territory’s economy thanks to its strategic position.
Rediscovered at the end of the 19th century, thanks to Giovanni Spano, Filippo Vivanet and Filippo Nissardi, Nora is also where the martyrdom of Sant’Efisio takes place, to whom the church erected in 1089 is dedicated. In addition to the beautiful ruins of the Archaeological Park of Pula, the site also includes the Lagoon of Nora, considered one of the largest biodiversity heritage of the island.
Nora Jazz Festival: the events of the musical festival
Established as one of the most significant festivals of the jazz scene and organized by the Association of Local Authorities for Cultural Activities and Entertainment of the city of Cagliari, the Nora Jazz Festival for the twelfth edition is tinged with pink and offers four musical meetings, all female, in the name of quality and research.
The parterre of internationally renowned artists also adds a new and original narrative of the territory made in collaboration with the Touring Club.
In conjunction with the evening concerts, one can enjoy the wonderful historical and natural contexts of extraordinary importance, such as the historical itineraries that flank the remains of the ancient Roman theatre, the new mosaics facing the sea, the bays and the crystal clear waters, the silent lagoon areas, the famous design hotels and the excellent food and wine of the island cuisine.
