Marina Cafè Noir 2021, scheduled in Cagliari from the 16th to the 18th of September, is the unmissable appointment with the authors of national and international literature.
Marina Cafè Noir 2021, the festival of applied literature, returns to Cagliari from the 16th to the 18th of September and arrives for the first time at the Poetto kiosk which became a reference point for musicians and fans or the Corto Maltese.
“Lost sailors”, a tribute to one of the most intense novels by the French writer Jean-Claude Izzo, is the theme of the review of the most beloved books of recent months, meetings with writers and current issues regarding the difficulties of modern lost sailors and their ability to stay afloat in the great sea of life, waiting for the storm to pass and resume the journey.
The festival is an opportunity to turn the spotlight on the difficulties of that sea of artists, writers, actors, musicians and operators of the show, invisible and often poorly paid, they represent one of the most affected sectors by the pandemic and continue to be at the mercy of the currents that are stirring up our daily lives.
The protests of these workers, which culminated with the Bauli event in the square, suggested to the organizers of the Marina Cafè Noir 2021 the theme of the nineteenth edition of the festival: “It was when we saw several hundred workers standing still beside their trunks, gripping to their flight cases as if these symbols of stage and square work symbolized the hope of not being abandoned, for the wood not to drift, not to sink, that’s when we said: they look like castaways. We all look like lost sailors”.
But “Lost Sailors” is also the Mediterranean novel by Izzo that talks of exiles and mestizos, legends, myths and tragedies, a multicultural and multi-ethnic city, lives and destinies indissolubly linked to that wonderful sea that also surrounds Sardinia. Travel and adventure, belonging and identity, the perpetual movement of feelings and the encounter with each other, the intertwining of past, present and future that gives shape to memory, an open and cosmopolitan city, are themes that animate the writing of the French author and the pillars on which the festival is based.
The words of Izzo describe the soul of the 2021 edition of Marina Cafè Noir, and more precisely a phrase from the novel Chourmo: “You were not from a neighbourhood or a city. You were chourmo. In the same jail, rowing! To escape. Together.”
Marina Cafè Noir 2021: the calendar of the nineteenth edition
Marina Cafè Noir 2021 is a three-day celebration full of events related to music, theatre, cinema and visual arts, places, food and conviviality.
The longest-running literary festival in Sardinia was founded in 2003, in one of the historic districts of Cagliari, the Marina, by a group of readers and cultural activists, which later became the cultural association Chourmo. The festival is inspired by the desire to organize a festival that recalls a popular festival made of shared knowledge and stories to be brought back in the streets, squares, bars, shops, workshops and, more generally, among the people.
Marina Cafè Noir is a busy festival, popular and free, which mixes the various artistic languages to demonstrate how culture and literature are not so distant from every day, in fact, the soul of the event is related to issues of migration, human and civil rights, counter-cultures and counter-economies, labour, prisons, crime and movements against them, and eco-sustainability, of underground and resistant cultures.
The focus is to fight the dark times with literature and its sharing to create a place in which to continue producing critical and utopian thinking. For this reason, the program of each edition, including that of 2021, includes debates, meetings, screenings, concerts, performances, workshops, exhibitions and installations.
The list of guests who took part in the various editions of Marina Cafè Noir is long: Wu Ming to Erri De Luca, Michela Murgia to Dominique Manotti, Serge Latouche, Roberto Saviano, Paco Ignacio Taibo, Nanni Balestrini, Alan Pauls, Zerocalcare, Bjorn Larsson and Marc Augè, just to name a few.
To the national and international authors must be added those of the many musicians, actors, directors and photographers who over the years have alternated on the stage of the festival: Gianmaria Testa, Roy Paci, Max Casacci, Louis Sclavis, Paolo Fresu, Massimo Zamboni, Egle Sommacal, Camillas, Fabrizio Poggi, Pinuccio Sciola, Marco Baliani, Iaia Forte, Sergio Staino, Ivo Milazzo, Tito Topin, Emanuele Crialese, Lorenza Mazzetti, Sebastien Izzo, Pablo Volta, Mimmo Calopresti Igort, Angelo Monne, Otto Gabos, Paco Roca, Mario Dondero, Uliano Lucas, Kid Millions and many more.
