On Tuesday, 20 October, at 9 p.m., Teatro Doglio in Cagliari is preparing to host the renowned Turin-born actor Luca Argentero, who will bring È questa la vita che sognavo da bambino? to the stage, a theatrical production directed by Edoardo Leo and dedicated to the stories of three protagonists who are very different from one another, but united by life paths marked by talent, passion, choices and determination. On the stage of Via Logudoro, the actor will accompany the audience through the stories of Luisin Malabrocca, Walter Bonatti and Alberto Tomba, three figures who have left an important mark on Italian sport and who, through the theatrical narrative, become the starting point for a broader reflection on the aspirations and decisions that contribute to shaping one’s own path.
The show, lasting approximately 90 minutes, will alternate storytelling, irony, and moments of greater introspection, bringing to the stage not only the achievements of its protagonists, but above all what lies behind their journeys: the opportunities seized, the obstacles faced, the courage to follow a calling, and the often complex relationship between what one imagines as a child and the life one chooses to build over time. An evening that combines theatre and biographical storytelling, offering spectators the opportunity to encounter some of the greatest sporting legends of the Italian scene from an unprecedented perspective.
“È questa la vita che sognavo da bambino?”: Luca Argentero tells three stories of sport and passion on stage
The starting point of È questa la vita che sognavo da bambino? is three true stories, belonging to different eras and worlds, but united by the same passion for sport, healthy competition and the achievement of childhood dreams. Under the direction of Roman director, actor, and screenwriter Edoardo Leo, Luca Argentero uses the stories of the three great athletes to tell what happens when a person encounters their talent, decides to follow it, and then finds themselves dealing with the consequences of their choices.
The journey begins with Luisin Malabrocca, the cyclist who became famous for the so-called Black Jersey of the Giro d’Italia. His story introduces an unusual perspective on the concept of success: his character is linked to an idea of sport in which even last place can become an element of recognition and provide a valuable opportunity to build a relationship of esteem and recognition with the public. In the theatrical narrative, the cyclist from Tortona thus represents a figure far removed from the traditional hero, capable of winning the audience’s empathy precisely through a journey that apparently goes in the opposite direction to victory.
The second protagonist of the show is Walter Bonatti, one of the most important mountaineers on the Italian and international scene. Through his story, it is possible to understand how the mountains are not merely a physical place, capable of providing an opportunity to test endurance, courage and the ability to face extreme situations, but also a space in which relationships between people, difficulties and conflicts that may accompany a great achievement emerge. Bonatti’s story therefore makes it possible to shift attention from the result to the person behind the achievement.
Finally, Alberto Tomba arrives, the protagonist of a completely different era of Italian sport. With Tomba, the story enters the age of great television popularity and sport transformed into a collective phenomenon: the Bolognese skier’s victories become part of the collective imagination and the dreams of an entire generation. His presence in the show thus introduces another way of experiencing success, that of an athlete capable of transforming his talent into a form of popularity that goes far beyond sporting competition.
Malabrocca, Bonatti and Tomba: three different ways of pursuing a dream
The choice of the three protagonists is one of the most interesting elements of the show. Malabrocca, Bonatti and Tomba do not have the same personality, do not belong to the same generation and did not face the same difficulties. It is precisely this distance that makes it possible to construct a story made up of similarities and, above all, contrasts, in which the idea of success takes on personal and different meanings.
One person becomes popular almost by chance, another faces solitude and risk in order to achieve a goal, while another transforms extraordinary sporting ability into a phenomenon capable of involving an entire country. The three stories thus become three different ways of confronting talent, fame and the expectations of others.
The question contained in the title then functions as a sort of common thread. È questa la vita che sognavo da bambino? does not concern only the athletes told about on stage, but can be addressed to anyone who, at a particular moment in their life, finds themselves comparing the expectations of childhood with the reality they have reached as an adult, reflecting on the concrete possibility of building a life consistent with their aspirations.
At Teatro Doglio, sport becomes storytelling: Luca Argentero on stage with the direction of Edoardo Leo
Giving voice to the stories of the three protagonists is Luca Argentero: his stage presence is essential because the text does not focus on a spectacular reconstruction of their sporting achievements, but on the actor’s ability to guide the audience into their stories, recounting their lives while highlighting their most human aspects. It is precisely this approach that allows the show to move naturally from the sporting dimension to the personal and social one, showing how behind every achievement there is always a story, a choice and a particular idea of oneself.
The direction is instead by Edoardo Leo, who also shared the writing of the project with Argentero himself and screenwriter Gianni Corsi. He aims to accompany the monologue without turning it into a simple succession of biographies, instead constructing a journey in which the three stories interact with one another and with the central question suggested by the title. The character of the show therefore emerges through a balance between lighter moments and passages devoted to the more complex aspects of the lives being told. Irony makes it possible to bring closer characters who have now entered the collective imagination, while the more intimate dimension allows the story to go beyond the athlete’s public image.
